Aaaand here are the very deserving finalists and their final entries! Be patient with the judging, we've got quite an impossibel task ahead of us ;3
Law of Talos: Round 5 Finals
I will update these with the newest Spectator Entries as well as a few randomly chosen from the full list. See the full list here: sins-of-angels.deviantart.com/…
Who better to feature for the final round than our two finalists? I won't feature any actual LoT entries, but both of their galleries are full of so many other forms of win that there's nothing to disappoint! And also: megaswf.com/view/a600d52a67ed8… Go left to right, up to down. And laugh. A lot. I did. x3
:unknown-person: And, of course:
Both of these artists are simply amazing in everything they do, and I am lucky to know them and be able to see their works. DA & OCT love, ftw. :3
OC contests still accepting auditions, for those who want to get in the game! (and some that have started but are worth a look regardless!)
And, of course, there are leagues you can get in on: 's SDL league, and a new up-and-coming league worth checking out:
An awesome, easy-to-follow guide to current and past OC Tournaments:
If you know of any others, feel free to suggest them so I can feature them!
Yeah! when she posted this journal, I saw she said they'd have to take a while to decide the winner, but 20 days?! great googly moogly!
I must know who won and this waiting is killing me! *stabs herself with a sword* see.... I'm dead.... now I'm gonna come back as a ghost and haunt the judges every night in their sleep until they decide the winner.
Yeah. The contest is based more on artstyle, story telling, and character development. Just because U.P. made Karl lose doesn't mean he's out of the contest. If he were to forfeit, then he wouldn't have posted anything at all.
I'd do ANYTHING to enter LoT Exept voice act -.- Mic broke. But really! My character is fast on his feet and ALWAYS gets into fights. Please, enter me if you wish to have LoT get more Mayhem. I'll be waiting for a response.
I think Blacklillian's entry is a bit better than Unknown-Person's. It ties together every other character in the competition, but its central focus is still the battle of wits between Karl and the Professor. The departure from plain combat as the main attraction in BL's entry sets it above Unknown's in my opinion. It really finally rounds out, and then answers, Karl's philosophy on life.
This round, like everyone else has said, is going to be really hard to judge. XD But something that's been bugging me was Lil's entry. I was looking incredibly forward to it and then I was dissappointed for some reason. I mean, her art and execution was gorgeous, but I guess for me it was the story that ruined it. I found it to be a little predictable, I guess. And while some of the scenes were sad and intense, I read the entire thing with a blank emotion. On the other-hand, Unknown's did have some obvious moments, but it did surprise me a lot. The obvious parts being the Raven scene, but he probably did that on purpose anyway. Though overall his entry shocked me a lot and I had a whole lot of emotions running through me at once. However, despite that, this is a totally tough call. Good luck with the final decision. Too bad they can't tie.
*reading everyone's comments weeks after they were posted XD and lo and behold I come across yours*
I'll have to disagree with you here. I'm leaning more towards BL's entry as the winner simply because she handled Karl very very differently compared to all the folks in the tournament. For one, she didn't shatter him. Every one of Unknown's opponents shattered Karl to itty bitty bits and they all failed to beat him because they were using the same method of defeat. Lil on the other hand did not shatter him but did something rather poetic, turned him in to the thing he hates most. She also tied up her entry, yes it was all rather convenient they way she did it but it had a nice conclusion to the whole thing. While Unknown's had far too many loose ends. Yes, I know he was going for suspense but in this case there were just too many unanswered questions and had me scratching my head rather than in suspense.
Don't get me wrong though, I love Unknown's animations. His entry had so much emotion. I've never felt so bad for the murderous bastard XD His movies are always a blast to watch. Lil's had some gut wrenching parts as well; Annie and Murphy ;n; and her art and composition were fantastic. Overall though I think BlackLillian has Unknown on the ropes.
XD *Because I'm totally all over the LOT circuit.*
That's true and an understandable and valid point; she didn't break him which was a very good call as far as the story went. I respect your opinion on it and that's true; I actually think that she'll be the one to finally take him out despite how I felt about her entry myself.
That's the reason I'm torn. BlackLillian's art and ability to bring everything and everybody together in that finale really had me going for it for a long while, but the ending seemed to... clean, I guess. Everything was neatly wrapped up in one blaze of magical glory. Everything is undone, everything is fixed, everybody lives happily ever after. For all the build-up and pain suffered before that, it was a bit of a let-down.
Were the ending perhaps a bit less clean (although I don't know how that would be possible without killing Annie, given the buildup, which is probably not the best course of action to follow), I would say that BlackLillian would be the winner hands-down. Everything (and everybody) came together beautifully. Moreso than Unknown-Person.
But Unknown managed to swing me quite the opposite direction. I expected something relatively normal and easy-to-anticipate throughout, and was generally nonplussed by the plot development (especially since I had read BlackLillian's entry first). The ending, however, was a lovely surprise and a wonderful shock, and the suddenness of the ending and ambiguity intrinsic to it left me stunned.
So I'm looking at the entries through two dichotomies; Lillian's, which had a wonderful opening and body and a lackluster ending, and Unknown's, which had a good-but-not-great opening and thrust itself into a superior emotional roller coaster by the end.
I agree as well. The entry was good until everything was wrapped up nicely at the end. I think the point of a finale is to make your audience want to know what happened to the contestant. Don't get me wrong, with Unknown's entry, I'm not just worried about Karl. I want to know what he's going to do with Annie. And the Professor. Is he really dead, or just knocked out and still able to be saved? And Climber and Jackie? What happened to them? And what did the Law of Talos mean by 'see you next time'? GAH! So many questions he left unanswered which draws so much emotional response from me it hurts. I nearly cried at the end of his. And those unanswered questions don't even include the unanswered questions about Karl's past which Unknown has been dangling just out of reach. Who was the guy in the coat with the gun? And what really happened with that red-head? Who is she anyways?
I'm gonna stop while I'm ahead. But personally, Black-Lillian's wasn't my favorite and I was a bit let down too with the perfect happy ending. But even if she does win, I think she does deserve it as much as Unknown because she's put a lot of work and effort into her stuff and you can tell she really put her heart into this.
I feel the exact opposite. I think Lil's filled me with more emotion that UP's. I don't know... Lil's had some finality, and it made me happy to have it finished. And I nearly cried at parts. But UP's... something was missing, and I can't put my finger on it.
But we have different opinions. ^^ All we can do now is hope for the best (and reasonably fast results).
Personally, to me, both of these entries made me smile, laugh, cry, steam with anger and all of those funny emotions. I haven't been watching Lil's entries from the beginning, but this one is worth reading. It's a toss-up win, which of course, is fun beyond fun. Sometimes people have one definate winner, this one? Who knows, it'll take time to discover the winner.
I have a feeling Lil will win. Her story was a lot more compelling, and hell, she had it planned and used what she got to her advantage. That takes a certain amount of skill. I really like how she kept her past opponents in the competition, and how they each played a part in the finale. You really couldn't have pulled it off otherwise.
Unknown's was excellent too, and the animation was amazing, but there was something missing for me that I can't put my finger on. So I'm going for Lillian's entry.
